How to caulk your molding, trim and baseboards in 5 easy steps

Step 1 Selecting the correct caulk

Before you begin caulking you have to make sure that you have bought the correct caulk for the job. Make sure that the caulk you bought is paintable, if the caulk is not paintable then the paint will not adhere to the caulk. For the best results use a paintable silicone caulk. Silicone caulking is more flexible than acrylic caulking. Acrylic caulk with crack and shrink over time resulting in a poor finish product.

Step 2 Opening the tube

Use a razor to cut the tip of the tube clean off. When cutting the tip make sure to cut it to the desired size that you would like the bead of caulk to be. I recommend cutting the tip at a slight angle allowing for a more efficient bead flow when applying the caulking.

Step 3 Fill edges and gaps

Apply the caulk along the edges and cracks of the mounding. For best results apply from top to bottom.

Step 4 Smooth the bead

After you lay down the bead of caulk run your finger along the bead smoothing the caulking out. Make sure you begin smoothing the caulking immediately after laying the bead. For best results keep your fingers wet.

Step 5 Cleaning up

Before the caulking begins to dry use a wet rag to clean any caulking off of surfaces or tools.
